Project Background
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) retained Liesch to perform investigation and remedial activities at an unlicensed dump in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. The shallow ravine where the dump was located carried runoff water into Crandall’s Bay of the Wisconsin River. The WDNR authorized to have the dump properly removed and the impacted area investigated.
Scope of Work
The waste from the former dump at the property was excavated and disposed of at a regulated facility. The native soil remaining at the Site did not exceed State soil criteria except for lead and arsenic in select locations. Groundwater at the Site was impacted above State standards for select heavy metals. A risk assessment was conducted of the former dump to assess groundwater risk. Based on the results of the waste removal and subsequent testing, Liesch recommended that no further action be taken with regard to the former dump. The waste had been removed and the arsenic levels were within the range of naturally occurring concentrations in Wisconsin. In addition, groundwater contamination had decreased below State standards for select heavy metals. Based on additional investigation and monitoring, the former dump passed a comprehensive risk assessment. A “No Further Action Request” was made to the WDNR and subsequently granted.
